I
am interested in objects and spaces that allow for a kind of continuous transformation
between the actions of recollection and projection. I seek space
that is both intimately personal, through a device of sentimentality yet
open ended enough to continue through itself to another realm of concrete
evidence. Meditations on personal memories are often like strings of
fragmented parts, pieces of a puzzle one may either struggle with reconstructing
or which may be accepted unconditionally as a whole, yet angled
account of an experience. Through the effort of artistic collaborations,
it is ensured that this process does not implode upon itself in
an exclusionary diary of one persons interpretations. A conversation is determined
by a fragile balance of motivations, convictions and personal reason
that can be motivated by an infinite combination of dialogues. A physical
record of this process can provide a fresh interpretation of our experiences,
both in solitude and in a state of precarious yet trusting comradery
with others. With my solo work, I hope to form a strong set of boundaries
around concepts of presence. I try to extract specific fibers of a
situation that because of it’s inherent ephemeral nature, will always
be in
a flux of building up to something, an epiphany, a reason, which in turn
will
finally decay until it is either fact or fable. Specifically I am interested
in concepts of earth science, cycles and patterns found in nature,
and how the slow evolution of things so much bigger than us, can lend
us a sense of false, yet often tender security in the everyday life. How
the preciousness of any particular moment can be described, by a kind of
shelter,
an environment we may create for ourselves, a charm, an amulet, any token
or gesture made mostly unconsciously out of the desire to preserve oneself
in the face of inevitable ruin. Through
drawings, sculpture, and performance I intend to work with a fluid array
of tributes and artifacts as to form a kind of testament to the infinite
possibilities of the future. Shelby
